Supporting Sustainable Communities

Global Economic Development

When Layne founder Mahlon Layne first started the business, his water wells enabled the economic livelihood of his neighbors and community. Today, with projects and operations all around the world, the focus of our work remains essentially the same — supporting economic growth. Layne Christensen is committed to improving the social, environmental and economic conditions where we operate by providing jobs and conducting sustainable projects.

From water well drilling to mineral exploration, our operations can contribute to the economic growth of the local communities, regions or countries where our projects take place. Layne is proud of our commitment to hire local residents in both our domestic and international operations. Where minimum wage standards are in place, we exceed them to promote a better standard of living. We also purchase local goods and services so that our presence in a community helps to build a more stable operating environment and contribute to economic growth.

The complex nature of our drilling and construction projects requires training and experience to meet Layne Christensen’s high standards for quality and safety. To that end, we conduct extensive training for local hires as well as partners and clients. In regions where Layne has established a long-term presence, our drilling crews are generally comprised entirely of local residents. In our Mineral Exploration business, this local engagement strategy enables Layne to operate more efficiently, effectively and to develop strategic partnerships with local providers.

Our work in remote or underdeveloped areas often results in important community infrastructure advancements. From improving or creating roads to drilling water wells, our work and investments leave a lasting legacy. When sociopolitical unrest leads to stoppages or delays in our work, we understand the business implications, but we feel for the local workers whose livelihoods are compromised. We view our sustainability as an organization as being inherently tied to our ability to support global economic growth.
